Garden Design IdeasGarden Ideas, Photos and Tips for Gardening at Home

Deer and gardening do not mix . The deer chomp on everything , leaving gardeners dejected and disenchant . But have tenderness ! you may make a stylish landscape using deer - resistant plants such as cosmetic smoke , Japanese timberland grass , box , and more . Some plants I show here are not cervid - resistant , such as pines , but we cover those in light connection in the winter and spray often with deer repellant . In summer , the plant life are not touched because there is other food to eat out in the Mrs. Henry Wood .

The photos here show a modern landscape painting I create for a tremendous client who lives in deer country . The menage is a white contemporaneous social structure with large windows — complete for create an indoor - outdoor setting .

A Functional , Artful Accent

This striking metal bird bath , with its pear-shaped lavatory and stand , seemed to call for a circular base so we fashioned a bombastic , round bluestone for it to sit down on . I placed it near the soft grasses for a beautiful contrast . Photo by : Jan Johnsen . Design Tip : Soft grass blades look wonderful against metal or stone features . And a bird tub always helps our avian friends .

Repetition Always Helps

I had to make screening and interest in a narrow distance so we planted white pine tree ( we trim them every year ) and I placed a series of terra - cotta planters as a repetitive component . The trees are repeatedly spray with cervid repellent in wintertime . I occupy the planters with crushed rock to keep them in situation . We chose not to plant them up … but they would look outstanding with something in them . Photo by : Jan Johnsen . Design Tip : Bluestone on edge makes a great plant life bed border , as testify here .

Side Dining Terrace

We built a wall and installed a bluestone terrace off the side of the house to serve as a post to grill and consume outdoors . The wall offers partial protection and the terrace open up up to a scurvy garden . Viburnumandboxwoodare the deer - tolerant bush here . It is a lovely mount to enjoy on a summer even . picture by : Jan Johnsen . Design Tip : The bluestone pavers are set in a " planking " pattern which looks like tenacious strips of paving . It adds a contemporary jot to the landscape .
