A new garden fills in beautifully
Lisa Remby send in today ’s photos .
After many years of living in theMidwestfor work , my husband and I decided to move back to Massachusetts for retirement in 2020 . Like the Pilgrims , we landed in Plymouth , on the south shore , about 40 mi south of Boston , in garden Zone 6b . Coastal breezes and flaxen dirt create a perfect mood forhydrangeas , grasses , sedums , and other perennials that favour tight - drain grime . Because our base was new construction , this garden was an opportunity to start from loot . The edifice blocking were several Japanese tree diagram and shrub varieties such as white pine(Pinusparviflora , Zones 4–7 ) , black pine(Pinus thunbergii , zone 5–8 ) , lilac(Syringareticulata , Zones 3–7 ) , dappled willow(Salixintegra‘Hakuro Nishiki ’ zone 5–7 ) , various maples(such asAcerpalmatum , Zones 5–9 ) , and hinoki cypress(Chamaecyparisobtusa , Zones 4–8 ) . A foresighted , collateral rock walk from the driveway to the front room access is cast anchor by 25 lavender plants(Lavandula× intermedia , geographical zone 5–8 ) . This path aid to divide the orthogonal front blank space into several smaller stratified areas disperse with large rock from the construction web site , along withbulbsand perennial . We have just marked the third summer of our unexampled , full - Sunday garden , bring us much pleasure and opportunities to confabulate with neighbors as they stroll by .
The stone walkway takes visitors on a wander walk through a form of bed . Trees , shrubs , and large stones are used as anchors .

This is how the beds look after they were fill with a variety show of perennial sedums , guara , grasses , and ahardy cactus . The open lots to the south of our house made the first summertime challenging , as the plant did n’t have much shelter from gusty coastal winds and blowing sand .
The layer closest to the front porch is set aside for a carpet or tapis garden — a bed for a assemblage oflow - originate perennials . A recycled rainwaterirrigation systemwas installed as part of the house beds to provide drip irrigation .
The marrow square of the pathway was create for this steel sculpture , now plant with aclimbing rose(Eden ’ 85 ) and tramp rose(Rosa‘Miemirrot ’ ) .

A lavender mete cast anchor the long stretch of walkway(Lavendula‘Vicenza Blue ’ ) .
The front far corner of the garden vitrine ( left to right)Digitalishybrida‘Arctic Fox Rose ’ ( Zones 5–9 ) , upright sedums(Sedum‘Pink Bomb ’ and ‘ brainy ’ , Zones 4–8 ) along withoakleaf hydrangea(Hydrangea quercifolia‘Sikes Dwarf ’ , Zones 5–9 ) , andMonardadidyma‘Purple Rooster ’ ( Zones 4–9 ) , as well as blooms fromHeuchera‘Grape Expectations ’ ( Zones 4–9 ) .
A hardly blooming shuck ofAlliumamethystinum‘Red Mohican ’ ( Zones 4–9 ) lord over the tapestry garden , which includes creeping thyme such asThymus‘Annie Hall ’ ( Zones 4–8 ) and woolyThymus pseudolanuginosus(Zones 5–8 ) , low - uprise stonecrops such asSedum‘Coral Carpet ’ ( Zones 3–9 ) , and blue fescue(Festuca‘Elijah Blue ’ , Zones 4–8 ) .

This view of the carpet garden feature Scotch moss(Sagina subulate‘Aurea ’ , Zones 4–8),Sedum spurium‘Dragon ’s rip ’ ( Zones 4–8 ) , Scotch ling ‘ Tip’(Callunavulgaris , Zones 4–6 ) , and ‘ Red Dragon’Japanese maple(Acer palmatum‘Red Dragon ’ , Zones 5–9 ) . In the background , the gaudy sweet autumn clematis(Clematisterniflora , Zones 5–9 ) is in full rosiness on the gatearbor . We now have a family construct next door that frames the front garden nicely and protect it from wind .
Inmidsummer , the front beds were full of showy bulbs and perennial such asAllium sphaerocephalum‘Drumstick ’ ( Zones 4–8),Asclepiastuberosa(butterfly weed , Zones 5–9 ) , Shasta daisy(Leucanthemum× superbum , Zones 4–9 ) , and flower oakleaf hydrangea .
