2019 , where do I begin?!Starting off the class , I ’d like to consider I have it away what it has planned for me , but I never really do . fourth dimension is totally irregular which is what makes life history so exciting .
So as we breeze so effortlessly into a 2020 , I ’d like to take the time toshare a summary of what happened in 2019 . While I ’m quick to move forward , I relish having a fiddling look back now and again . It ’s too easy to lose racecourse of all that has happened and accomplished otherwise . I hope you will take a few moments to chew over back on the ups and John L. H. Down of your year as well and celebrate how far you have come !
Garden Therapy 2019 Highlights
There was so much — both well-chosen and sad — that took office over the last 365 day . Here ’s a quick sum-up of 2019 , plus my top 19 stake of the class . Looking back I can see that 2019 was quite the whirlwind ! I ’m sure most of you’re able to refer .
The Northwest Flower and Garden Festival in Seattle
I started out 2019 just as I have the last several class in a wrangle : preparing for my seminar at theNorthwest Flower and Garden Festivalin Seattle .
I commit a Garden 101 lecture alongside some fabulous herb experts . We talk over how to grow herbs , harvest them , and create a nursing home pill roller to best utilize the sinewy healing properties of these flora .
Later , I take the microscope stage and give a live demo of how to make some of the project from myHome Apothecarybook . I showed formula for lavender bathing tub melts , calendula app bars , herbal bathtub salts , natural botanical perfume , and more .
A real highlight for me was meeting with many of you after my talking . I got to sign book , answer questions , and bust some photograph . It ’s always so fun to see your face in real liveliness !

Permaculture Design Certificates
In 2019 , I also complete two Permaculture Design Certificates . PDCs are like potato chips or tattoos , once you have one , you want more !
I did one online and and one in person with other Permies . There is something so inspire about being around others who be intimate plants , animals , hoi polloi , worm and all those around us . It truly filled my soul in a style that nothing else can !
Of course , that ’s not to say that a Permaculture Design Certificate is n’t a lot of body of work — it is . Each is an intensive program that takes me away from my family on evenings and weekends for weeks at a time . My kiddo was very apprehension and we did lots of fun activities to make up for those Clarence Shepard Day Jr. .
Writing My 9th Book: Garden Alchemy
I found myself all spring and early summer with my hand in the soil and on the computer to write my upcoming record , Garden Alchemy:80 Recipes and concoctions for constitutional fertilizers , plant elixirs , potting mixes , pest deterrents , and more .
While I have written many books , this was by far the most hard to drop a line because I go very deeply into some of the issuing with the sustainability of the natural resources on our beautiful satellite and how affair have acquire . I ’ll accept there were multiplication that I shake off tears on how far away from nature and disconnected we have become in some direction . But it was through some of those knockout feelings that I came out the other side witha book full of Bob Hope , joy , and FUN , connecting with the tools that nature has given us and becoming stewards of our own little slice of garden . My goal was to write an entertaining record book full of creative projects , experiments , and recipes that would make it both fun and easy to get back to nature and build a expectant garden from scratch and from theearly review , I ’m proud to say I reckon I can check that goal off inclination !
Saying Goodbye to my Mother
Sadly , in the middle of writing the book , I got a call that my mother was in her terminal day . I immediately dropped everything and take flight to her bedside where I stayed with her until she top , peacefully . When I returned home , I was glad to have the Christian Bible to focalize my Department of Energy on , as I really love my mean solar day writing , testing , and playing withGarden Alchemy .
The Summer of Adventure
When I delivered the completed manuscript , the grief hit me , and I did the unexpected . I bought a used camper van and hit the road with my family for most of the summertime ! It was something that I had wanted to do for almost 15 years and when I said goodbye to my female parent , I decided that I did n’t want to wait another twenty-four hours to dwell my risky venture .
For the first summer in 12 years , I left my garden to go wild , while I spent my twenty-four hour period and nights with campfires , river , lake , oceans , and moss - covered forests . The expert part was that whenever I came home , I could see all of the welfare of permaculture as my wild garden was prosper ! I have been regenerative horticulture for class , but this was the true test . Without me in the mix , would the garden still thrive ? It for sure did !
Visiting The Lone Star State
I did n’t move a peck in 2019 , but when I did , it was to Texas ! I was in Texas for exactly 1 Clarence Shepard Day Jr. 20 years ago , so I ca n’t fully say I had n’t been before , but this twelvemonth I got a more thoroughgoing experience .
I go to Dallas in April for aJobes eventwhere we drop time at the beautiful Dallas Arboretum making constitutional container gardens filled with edible plant and herbs . I enjoy search the Arboretum vastly — I specially bed the child ’s garden there !
I ended up work back to Austin in October for a league . During my clock time in Austin , I give way togoat yoga(so much playfulness ! ) and visited theLady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center , which was just breathtaking .
The Holiday Gifts Workshop
I ended the yr by teaching a crew of new bookman in myBotanical Beauty Holidays Gifts Online Workshop . This was one of my favorite classes I ’ve done because I believe so strongly in the content ! I really believe that even the most novice of crafters can create beautiful hand-crafted product using innate botanicals and plant - based ingredients .
I teach gradation - by - footfall direction through projects such as program saloon , bath bombs , soakage , and melting — all made from lifelike , industrial plant - base constituent . Of naturally , I had to speak to the herbal place and wellness benefit of each plant like I do on my live talks at garden show and issue . I even let in printables and gift wrap instruction so their homemade gift wouldreallystand out during the vacation . It was a good time !
