My basketful - ball sized pumpkins attend in the lemon tree tree at the bottom of my garden .
Theaerial pumpkinscontinue to be the stars of this season ’s vegetable garden . The fruits in the picture above are hanging in the lemon tree at the bottom of the garden , and they front like shining orange lantern hanging in the tree . People keep asking me if they are going to fall one of these days , but I opine the root are made of moderately problematical fibers and doubt that the hanging weight will make breakage . The pumpkin are n’t that big really — about basketball size or smaller — but we ’ve catch a number of them , so we ’ll be able to have a overnice stock of pumpkins and other mash for wintertime eating .

The amusing aspect of our squash harvest this year is that it happened where we did n’t look it . I planted a 12 unlike squash industrial plant in cautiously devise beds and was optimistic about their chances for bountiful production . Alas , only one of those plants has produced illustrious fruit . But I did have a half dozen remnant seedlings I did n’t desire to kill , so I ascertain a few corners here and there where I could tuck in the seedlings . Of course , all of those 2d - social class locations ended up being the sea wolf locations , and all six of the remnant seedlings have get noted squash vine . Ha !
This is the best - looking part of my garden — not so pretty , is it ?
The exposure to the right is of one of my best beds . I show it because I dislike garden writers and most garden mag that only show the wonderful stuff . This layer from which I ’ve cautiously test out the John Rock and to which I have fondly added bag and handbag of fresh manure from the dairy up the hill looks reasonably lousy this week . Of naturally , it is the end of summer and most of the garden looks similar . The plants having already borne their fruits , but the point is that all gardens do n’t look like the images on the cover of Wonderful Gardens clip . Ours is a real garden , and therefore often looks bum .

I think that garden loser is the huge unmentionable topic in the garden world , but it is a very literal part of our lives as existent gardeners . precious looking plants that we ’ve purchase from the greenhouse do n’t always acquire well , and in fact , failure is more common than winner with gardens . We kill enormous amounts of plant in our gardens . Everybody does . The flower bed at Disneyland depend marvelous because the jiffy the picayune flora pop wait shaggy-haired , they are ripped out and supplant with fresh specimens . But we do n’t think about that , and instead we unremarkably say something like “ Boy , those gardeners are really expert ! ”
Sure , garden do pass through phases when everything is smashing and there are always some domain that are grow dead . But real gardening call for a mountain of failure , disappointments and underperformance . Just like spirit . But that does n’t mean that it ( live on or gardening ) is any less fun .
