It ’s prescribed . We have three achiever of Scott Calhoun ’s book , Designer Plant Combinations ! Hearty extolment – and a transcript of Scott ’s book – go out to Sheryl Yoder ( Jeffersonville , IA ) , Jada Edwards ( Grayson , GA ) and Dennis Westler ( San Francisco Bay surface area , CA ) .
I sent each of them a questionaire to complete and asked them for a photo or two . Here ’s what I learned .
Sheryl Yoder

“ I never bring home the bacon anything , so this really is cool ! ” Sheryl started off . “ Since we now live in a patio home … I need to study new style to contrive in force plantings . ” Sheryl has been read Fine Gardening ’s blog for about a year but only recently read , admitting that , “ I was a lurker for a while before I sign on . ”
No damage done , Sheryl . Sometimes it ’s best to put your pinkie toe in the water before you jump in .
Sheryl garden in Zone 6a and hopes that Scott Calhoun ’s volume will encourage her to plant in multiples , rather than succumbing to the condition frequently diagnosed as “ one - of - each - itis . ” She incline to buy just one specimen of an unusual industrial plant , “ and then I do n’t get the effect I hope for . ”

Be sheer , Sheryl ! Your garden will give thanks you .
The standout this twelvemonth was her pineapple salvia that , unfortunately , did n’t initiate flower until after all the hummingbird had flee to warmer clime .
Though only a recent proofreader ofFine Gardening‘s blog , Sheryl is no newcomer to horticulture . “ I ’ve been hooked since I was a child , spending sentence with my Grandpa in his vegetable and bloom garden . ”

Jada EdwardsJada Edwards ’ e - ring armour opened with a knock !
“ Hi Billy , I am VERY worked up to be a winner ! I ’m look forward to read the Christian Bible ! ”
Not one to skimp on exclaiming point , Jada shared her enthusiasm and expectation about how the new Bible would enhance the feeling of her Zone 7b , Georgia garden . “ Honestly , when I ’m shopping for flowers or seeds , I do n’t really give any thought to how they ’ll look plant together . I just buy what I like . Problem is when I get home , I have trouble deciding what to plant where !

This class ’s show - offs were Jada ’s zinnias , giving the menage “ estimable curb solicitation . ” Her pic ( below ) says it all .
And I love the relaxed , minimize grin on her Word , Will ! Stay tuned : With that face , Will might presently have his own show on HGTV .
Jada is a comparative freshman at theFine Gardeningwebsite . In fact , she ’s only been gardening for a class . Her independent interest is growing ( and I guess eat ) veg , which explains why she has spent more clock time at FG ’s babe site , www.vegetablegardener.com . But as passionate as she is about growing edibles , she screw to plant flowers “ to attract pollinators and just to enjoy for their own sweetheart ! ”

Jada sign on off with , “ I am totally glom on horticulture as a hobbyhorse and a way to reduce my grocery flier ! Thanks for letting me apportion ! I certainly appreciate this winnings … can’t wait to meliorate my garden invention . ”
Dennis Westler
Dennis Westler is a professional gardener “ go for to find novel combinations of flora I have not thought of myself . ”

dread not , Dennis ! This book will knock your socks off . Your capitulum will be spin with fresh ideas to try out in your guest ’ gardens . ( That ’s the cool matter for professional interior designer — you’re imagination does n’t have to stop at your own property business line . )
Rudbeckia trilobatawas Dennis ’ startling asterisk performing artist this class , appearing from a mysterious unpaid worker seedling and topping off at a sky - scraping five feet improbable . “ It was a tower of niggling Brown University - centered , intense lily-livered daisies for ten workweek . ”
I asked everyone to secern me their favorite flora , but Dennis had a hard prison term narrowing his choice . The dismal - flower perennialCorydalis flexuosa(Blue Corydalis , a new industrial plant to me ) was eminent on his leaning , but so were the alien southeastern Asian Pleiones orchidaceous plant , though they are n’t exactly garden plants .

A valet after my own heart — and nozzle — he wishes he could raise herbaceous peonies . I partake his defeat , having unsuccessfully tried to integrate them into gardens when I was a designer in the San Francisco area , always frustrated at their lackluster carrying into action .
His part input when asked how long he ’s been garden ? “ Thirty long time . Yikes ! ” Yes , Dennis , time marches on . But at least you ’ve been have the world a more beautiful property , one garden at a time .
Thanks to everyone who recruit contest . There ’s another Quran up for grabs at my most recent post . Check outEasy Garden Simulations , then try your hand at the project I ’ve described and send me the results . Who knows ? You might gain your own transcript ofPlanting : The Design Book For The twenty-first Century .

Later , skater !
