Well , that suck me in . I launched into a discourse about estate - grant university and how there is so much more to farming than planting seeds and garner eggs . This in turn generated a bustle of responses but , to my surprise , none was about farming and higher education . or else , the Tweets focalize on me .

A Twitter user I ’ll call Crissy L. , for instance , zeroed in on my location , noting that survive in the Midwest does n’t make me a “ existent ” farmer . Tyler J. jumped on my comment about my across - the - street neighbour , Pam — not about Pam ’s miniature donkey and pygmy goat farm but about my economic consumption of the Good Book “ street . ” “ genuine ” farmers apparently do n’t employ the intelligence “ street , ” therefore I was not a “ real ” farmer . Boy C. also concentrate his attention on this gossip , claiming that “ real ” farmers do n’t have neighbors — they have only Admiralty mile and miles of farmland . The most astonishing answer , however , came from Reagan T. , who catch the link to my Hobby Farms column in my bio and declared that the original discussion was about “ real ” farms , not hobby farms .

Wow .

I mystify the distinct touch that most of these Twitter users ground their concept of farming on storybook noble-mindedness . “ Real ” farmers wear plaid shirts and denim overalls , spend the day mount John Deere tractors through their 300 demesne of farmland , and store their tractors at the end of the day in picturesque but dilapidated crimson barn . To be certain , there ’s nothing wrong with citizenry who do that . However , the reality of land has evolved beyond the kiddie painting book . Shutterstock

Location, Location, Location

I am far from the Midwest husbandman ’s daughter that the Beach Boys sing about in “ California Girls . ” I ’m actually a Wall Street executive ’s daughter . However , I am the granddaughter of farmers , and I spend several years living with my grandparent as well as one summertime on a dairy farm farm in France . That adorable little farm sport the refreshing , creamiest Milk River I ’ve ever had , productive with the flavor of the tiny Alpine strawberries the kine loved to crunch .

That farm was perch on a versant just outsideHéry , France . My grandparent ’ farm was in the Peruvian Andes . My farm is in rural Michigan . It ’s dependable that my location does n’t mechanically make me a sodbuster , just as Crissy remark in her Tweet . I ’m a Midwest farmer by option . That French couplet chose to own a dairy farm rather than , say , a ski recourse . My grandparents choose to be farmers rather than Andean risky venture outfitters . Barring any local ordinance restricting agricultural bodily process , a person can raise anywhere , from the rooftops of Chicago to the frontier land of of Alaska . Ana Hotaling

All Walks of Life Unite

Nicky is an net technician . Todd is an oculist . Katy is a U.S. Army vet . And I ’m a journalist and fitness teacher . If you imagine we have nothing in common , suppose again : We are all poultry farmers . Our oeuvre experience dissent , as do our educations and nurture . We might not have develop up in factory farm — or anywhere near it — but we are Farmer now . We all haul feed , fill waterers , collect eggs and watch our chickens ’ crazy antics . If you ’ve dreamed of have a quite a little of your own but have scruple because you ’re in accounting , applied science or retail sale , recoil your hesitation to the curb . If we can do it , so can you . After all , we were all novices at one time , and not a day goes by that we do n’t learn something new . Shutterstock

Size Matters Not

Not all farms are situate on extensive fields : what you farm has a direct influence on how much state is take . My neighbour Pam does n’t require a heap of terra firma for her pint - sized Equus asinus and goats . Nigel , whose dearest farm is just northerly of us , maintain his beehive on less than a quarter Akko . Emily grow heirloom veggie in a hoophouse in her side G . Louis be given to his summary hop farm just in the south of us . We all live along the same street ( or road , or rural itinerary — call it what you will ) of our township , separated by Akko or at most , a couple of miles . Does the size of our farm make any of us any less of a farmer ? utterly not .

Across America , increasing numbers of hoi polloi are turn to agriculture , raise crop and livestock on minor , more well sustained plots of land . Sometimes nation is n’t even take . Chicago’sUncommon Groundis a national loss leader in rooftop grow . Aquaponics , aquiculture and vertical gardening are popular with urban and suburban farmers , while bee- and wimp - guardianship are becoming more and more commonplace . None of these action requires extensive land area , yet all of them are bona fide agriculture . Shutterstock

Sorry , Boy C. , but I for one ca n’t imagine experience 50 acres — or more — occupy with chickens . My handful of landed estate keeps me engaged enough . Likewise , I ’m certain that Rona , who keeps a backyard flock in nearby Chelsea , has her hand full with her hen and would shudder at the work affect in keeping my flocks . Does Rona ’s backyard flock condition her as a farmer ? You well consider it does . Shutterstock

A Hard-Working Hobby

I vividly call in how difficult that Gallic yoke worked on their dairy farm . They were up before break of day , first to helping hand - milk their cows , then to guide them to their ley . The couple spend a great deal of time separating the cream from the Milk River , bottle both for sales agreement , and hired hand - churning butter . They had only six cows , but they were in use from dawn to gloam . Were they wealthy ? Not at all . Madame intrust to me once that their earnings scarce covered the cost of the bottles and caps , the veterinary fees and the wintertime feed . For them , keeping cows and farm dairy items for their fistful of node made them felicitous . That ’s all that count .

That ’s what ’s at the heart of hobby farming . Legally , ahobby farm is a not - for - profit agricultural entity . Those of us who own hobby farms are n’t in it for the money . We are motivate by factors we moot more important . My admirer David merely adore his chicken and peacock butterfly ; they bring great joy to his life . My friend Paris screw developing breeding projects and watching them come in to fruition in her flocks . Doug delights in growing organic vegetables for his married woman and select customer . And me ? I get a kick out of watching my birds ’ interaction , with each other and with us . They ’re a big source of inspiration , amusement , education and awe .

But do n’t recall for a minute , like Reagan T. did , that avocation farming is n’t “ real ” agriculture . Like that Gallic couple , we devote endless hr to tending our flocks , herds , hive and crop . We are often up to our ears in feed , fertilizer , water , weeding , aesculapian tending , nurture and more . We expend hours aggregation , cleaning , preparing , publicity , marketing and selling our farm ’s Cartesian product . A lot of time is pass cleaning and sanitize our tools , equipment , machinery and shelters . Hobby farming is n’t like stamp collection or needlepoint , pastimes that we can simply arrange aside and get back to when we ’re not interfering . It ’s an avocation and a career , a DoL but also a labour of dear .

Are you a hobby farmer ? Then you ’re as actual as you may get , even if you do n’t own a single tartan shirt or set of denim overalls . I might own them , but I do n’t need them to define me .
