We ’ve been following your blog for a few months , since we decided to move to Florida .   We come together on a home plate 2 wks ago & will be proceed down to ( the central Florida coastline ) in October from ( a really insensate state in the Northeast – USDA zone 4 ) .

First of all , welcome to Florida – this is a great position to garden . Let ’s talk Florida horticulture for beginners , because everyone is a beginner when they commute climates .

When calculate at a new property , the first affair I care to do is compute out where my Tree will go . yield and nut trees are long - terminus food - grow staging for a homestead .

In the center of the state , I ’ve found that the three easiest trees to grow aremulberries , loquatsandJapanese persimmons . After plant those , I ’d add in some “ sand pears ” ( Ananas comosus pear is my preferred diverseness , though Hood and Flordahome are also beneficial ) , along with figs . If you need to diddle around more , add peaches , nectarine tree and apple . Jujubes are also loose , as are bananas . Another great ( and often leave out ) fruit is yield by the pindo palm . It do the salutary jelly in the world . Plant multiples of each tree diagram and you ’ll have redundancy and good pollination for the tree that need it .

Citrus used to be easy but is n’t any longer , thanks to the many diseases now in the body politic , of whichcitrus greeningis the bad .   It ’s near you have a grapefruit but I would n’t add any more citrus until they count on out how to get the trainwreck - in - procession under control .

I ’m not sure if you may draw off chestnut or pecans in your raw location , since it might be too warm in the winter . Call your local agricultural propagation and require them . If you could , I ’d add both .

If you ’re right on the coast , you could add some plants that would be impossible further inland . Starfruit ,   macadamia   nuts , mango , jabuticabaand ocean grape are all good choices , though they may or may not flee . None of those will do well if temperature fall below 32F for more than a couple of hours . A south - face wall could credibly support pocket-size trees , however . I ’d try growing a starfruitlike I maturate my Key Lime treehere .

For solution crops , forget about some of the more Northern staple . you could grow some of them in the winter and spring , but they ’ll be nothing like you ’d get back home . Instead , think about mature exciting new crops like cassava , true yam , malanga , boniato , arrowroot ( Grower Jim pack it ) , yacon , gingerandsweet spud .

bank me – you ’ll barely miss the old solution once you try real yams or a ample , nutty malanga .

For berries and little fruit there are some capital selection . Improved diverseness of Surinam cerise ( I carry them in my nursery ) are easy to produce . Cattley Psidium littorale is wonderful . Southern highbush blueberry are pretty leisurely if you get the pH right at the beginning . you could also grow the interesting ( and tasty)Simpson Stopperbush . It ’s a native with unspoiled fruit . Mulberries are also really soft , though they ’re a tree . strawberry mark are potential but will   let down   you here . I do n’t think they ’re worth the effort . Mysore raspberries are a very good tropical cane fruit that ’s quite rich , though rather spiny . Passionfruit is another great craw and will incubate a fence nicely .

As for other crop , see growing some muscadine grapes . The grapes you regain at your local Home Depot / Lowe ’s are not likely to thrive in the heart of the body politic … even though they sell them anyhow . The disease pass over them out – but muscadines can take all variety of vilification , plus they make nice heavy grapes .

For greens and vegetables , consider growing malabar spinach , Okinawa prickly-seeded spinach , snake bean , eatable - riff hibiscus , katuk , moringa , Florida cranberry , ivy gourd , Ethiopian kale , collards , longevity spinach plant , oxalis ( spp),chayaand amaranth . They ’ll take the heat and keep on cookery and the perennial will mature for for years . you may also grow some pretty comme il faut Brassica oleracea italica in the winter . Mustard also does well .

It ’s nice to have modest winters .

If you add a pool , you could also get some very honorable plants like water celery , Formosan piddle chestnuts , duck’s egg potato , kang kong , water mimosa and taro . Highly productive , plus you do n’t have to water them !

Finally , take pictures before you begin imbed – it would be great to see some before - and - after shots . You ’re break down to have an amazing time garden down here . It will be thwarting , exciting , rewarding and delicious all at the same meter .
