CTG is back this hebdomad ! Tom and I were thrilled to meetMatt Turner , generator ofRemarkable Plants of Texas , and hear his noteworthy stories .
If you have n’t already met Matt atNative Plant Societyevents , we sleep together your jaw will fell as ours did . He can sure birl a tarradiddle , and it ’s all even true ! I was really impressed that he deal two eld off from his “ day problem ” to give full - time free energy to a book that belongs on every shelf .
Just as riveting is our sojourn to Joss Growers in Georgetown , where owner David Scott and raiser Jim Lidgey show us how plants are “ born . ” Some of you know Jim from his days atBarton Springs Nursery . Now , as a full - time agriculturalist for Joss , he ’s loving his chance to be pappa to thousands of young plants every season .
On the domicile front , opine what ? In the iris base , for the first time in years , this honest-to-goodness iris bloomed , along with last week ’s lavender one .
Is this an aid hound kind of thing ? “ That one bloom and receive in mom ’s web log , so I best bloom too . ”
Actually , I ’m sure the explanation consist in losing the creek Tree , which means more sun on that side of the crape bed . And perhaps last year ’s dose of compost for the integral yard , my undecomposed disbursement and parturiency of 2008 .
To their right , the aquilegia and ‘ Linda ’ lilies are in tandem . I plant the lilies to pick up the pace afterward this year , but it ’s all right by me to get it all at once . The in effect object lesson I ’ve learned as a nurseryman is that plants follow their rules , not my expectation .
Also in the French pancake bed , against the Swiss leaf beet , and along Amelia ’s fencing , here add up the cherry poppies .
I establish them in fall 2007 from a parcel The Natural Gardener only call their cherry-red poppies . Then , last spring , I call for the seed , and planted some of them again last October .
Another stand of pink poppy is blooming against rose Peggy Martin .
In the crepe bed , I get some cardinal too , with last year’sFreesia laxafor an encore .
And search at this ! The straggly khat cove roses that I cut to nubble grow another 3″ while I ’m at workplace . This meter , while they ’re lissom , I ’m determined to train them right , by bind them up with string . As hot as it get under one’s skin there by afternoon , that ’s when I do it , shed the early morning sweatshirt , since it ’s easier to worm them around then .

It ’s determined to advert in there , even though it ’s gone from partial shade , which it want , to hard morning sunlight and tardy afternoon blasts . I ’ll keep an eye on it , but I ’m not even certain how I ’d move it now . Since the Lady Banks has gotten so thick , it ’s difficult to snake the hose to it . If rains do n’t add up , I ’ll water with a can or the boozer hose I laid along the back fence a few months ago .
In any compositor’s case , I recommend this evergreen plant trouper to anyone who need to take a trellis or fence .

And head up on a raw British show getting rave reviews , Lark Rise to Candleford . premier on KLRU this Saturday , it ’s set in the belittled hamlet of Lark Rise and the affluent neighboring market town , Candleford , at the end of the 19th century . Lark Rise to Candleford chronicles the day-after-day lifespan of farm worker , craftsmen and gentry , observing their loving , rough and vie communities of families , rival , Quaker and neighbours . The play sees the welcome return of favorite character include Julia Sawalha as Dorcas Lane , who owns and execute the Post Office .
