Our “ gutters ” have aninitial larger screento catch leaves , with an extra finer screen right as the water enters the tank – sealing the army tank itself .

I put gutter in quotations because our house does n’t actually have any gutters ! or else , we put in a short plane section at a cap “ valley ” that had overweight runoff to divert into our largest armoured combat vehicle behind the chicken run . In the front of the house , we hooked up a large vintage copper funnel shape and tubing at another valley to catch runoff there . When our tank are full and more rainfall is in the prognosis , we displume off as much rainwater as possible to make more space , storing it in 5 - Imperial gallon buckets or even in tripe nates .

Using rainwater for garden irrigation

At this point in time , we do not have a pump system set up for our tanks . The height of the tank gives us decent enough head pressure to associate and use a hosepipe close by , specially when the tank are full . On the other hired hand , there is definitely not enough pressure to full - on water the garden with . Each tankful has a hosepipe bib near the bottom toconnect a hose to , or fill a watering canwith .

We may get a pump one day , but for now we mostly habituate the rainwater for ourhand - wateringneeds . For exercise , to body of water thecannabisplants , greenhouse seedling , air plant , house plant , makingcompost tea , making braggy batches offresh aloe waterfor transplanted trees , and other chlorine - tender United States . Plants LOVE rainwater , so we lay aside it for the spoiled ones . Another manner to provide chlorine - free water is to dribble your tap water withcarbon hose filter .

Because of the voltage for bacteria , try toavoid direct contact between rainfall piddle and your eatable crops . Especially leafy greens . But it is ok to H2O food with rain ! Soil and compost are excellent at buffering and purifying bacterium and even toxins . Just forefend splashing and spraying it about .
