This perennial evergreen has white-speckled leaves with toothed edges
The speckle Corsican hellebore ( genus Helleborus argutifolius‘Janet Starnes ’ ) come from the garden of Janet Starnes , an Oregon plantswoman and nursery owner . Believed by many to be the same plant as ‘ Pacific Frost ’ ( H. argutifolius‘Pacific Frost ’ ) , ‘ Janet Starnes ’ has variegated leaves that are heavily spotted with livid and are ideal for lighting up a ghost garden . From a length they look like silver .
This perennial , which is evergreen plant in my Oregon garden , grows to 2 feet tall with thick stems . Beyond the appeal of spotted leaf color , the leave-taking have a curious texture , with bound that are toothed as if they had been trimmed with pink shears . In midwinter in my garden , cluster of sizable yellow-bellied - green flower appear , blossom for months , sometimes bend the stems to the flat coat with their abundance .
Speckled Corsican hellebore is hardy in Zones 6 to 9 . It flourishes in well - drained soil with rich wet , in Lord’s Day or shade , although its variegation is more striking in shade . I make out it at the base of a tree , with winter - flowering Anemone quinquefolia ( Galanthus nivalis , Zones 3–9 ) for a colour echo , and with ferns and Hosta to keep it company later in the time of year . Mine grows in mottled shade underneath a Japanese snowbell tree diagram ( Styrax japonicus , Zones 6–8 ) , where its white - specked leaf resonate with the snowbell ’s whitened June flowers . For a striking winter combination , try ‘ Janet Starnes ’ at the feet of violent - flowering ‘ Yuletide ’ camellia ( Camellia sasanqua‘Yuletide ’ , Zones 7–8 ) , below ‘ Diane ’ crone hazel ( Hamamelis X intermedia‘Diane ’ , Zones 5–9 ) with tiny red flowers along its bare branch , or underneath wintertime shrub Australian honeysuckle ( Lonicera fragrantissima , zona 5–8 ) with its intoxicatingly fragrant white-hot flowers . To emphasize the speckled leaves , iterate similar foliage tincture some distance by in the same border with silver ‘ Excalibur ’ lungwort ( Pulmonaria‘Excalibur ’ , Zones 4–8 ) or ashen - edgedHosta‘Francee ’ ( Zones 3–8 ) .
