Irises. Benton Babies.
I am so beaming that I have pay back back to Suffolk in time to love my flag . They are the children and grandchild of Cedric Morris Benton fleur-de-lis . I start off with a few list varieties in my former garden . The terrific thing about irises is that all the seedling are dissimilar . Cedric Morris grew on about 1000 seedlings a year and pick out the skillful to name and cultivate . He prefix all the names with ‘ Benton ’ because his house at Hadleigh in Suffolk was called Benton End . I am not so fussy , in my eyes all my children are beautiful , some look quite like their parents and others quite different . But I think they are all exquisite .
They get in a delicious range of colours . The one on the right looks like its mother , ‘ Benton Susan ’ .
This one is pearly white with endearing markings .
Some are purple .
Others are more pink .
farm plant life from seed is always fun but growing iris with their infinite assortment of color combinations is the most exciting .
I am running out of space in the garden so I should discontinue growing iris seeds but I find it difficult to stop .
Cedric Morris was an creative person as well as a plantsman . His flower paintings are gorgeous . He ran an graphics shoal along with his collaborator , Arthur Lett - Haines after the state of war . floor of the goings on at Benton End abound and are always fascinating . The rule book , BentonEndRememberedis full of anecdote from the great unwashed who knew him and it is beautifully illustrated .
Of course , I do n’t turn back with Cedric Morris iris . California irises or Pacific Coast hybrids also storm me by look quite unlike their parents . This yellow one had a pink mother .
I also have lading of seed grownIrissibiricabut these are not all out yet so they can hold off for another day .
