I am SOOOO look forward to the San Francisco Flower & Garden Show this year ( March 24 to March 28 , at the San Mateo Event Center ) . Although I subsist in the Bay Area for a while , I in conclusion made my first sojourn to the show last class , and boy , was it worth my while !
There ’s by all odds something there for every stratum of garden interest , whether you ’re look for inspiration to spruce ( or cedarwood ) up your beds , get your food production into high gear – it ’s all about victuals these days – or come home with a carload of great gismo , gadgets and groovy new plants .
As a designer , I was immediately draw to the monstrance gardens . There were great ideas to pick over , imaginative uses of materials – have a go at it the shiny silver medal galvanized drain pipes turn on end and splosh water into a horse trough – and everywhere you looked , clever combinations of industrial plant . More than a few of the bits of glare I saw creep into my own designs this year . I also found some great products that are now part of my design “ dick kit ” .

Embarrassing as it is to admit this , last year ’s SFFGS was the first “ real ” garden show I ’ve been to in my decades - recollective career in the landscape biz . I was the proverbial Kyd in a confect depot . Aside from the great visual display , there were C of Cartesian product and nursery booth with experts in every imaginable aspect of horticulture .
What is even more amazing than the display and merchandise are the free seminar ( more than 60 this class ) feature garden experts and authors showing you exactly how to create great gardens of your own . And the Scripture signings ! Some of gardening ’s top authors , like Debra Lee Baldwin , Nan Sterman , Maureen Gilmer and others will be sharpen their pens .
The most impressive and cheer feature of last year ’s show was the way sustainable ( presume I say cool green ? ) design had been fully encompass by so many of the show ’s exhibitors . Did my heart honest .

As for me , I ’ll be driving up from Santa Barbara the first twenty-four hour period of the show , Wednesday , and staying very interfering through Saturday . I foretell I ’ll post a few blog from the show and will likely be Tweeting and Facebooking ( is that a word ? ) until my bridge player hamper up .
The show is for certain the chief attraction , but as long as I ’m in this garden - fertile locus I ’ll be taking side trips to the some of the greatest public gardens in the country :
I ’ve heard from a few friend who will be point into the wine country of Napa and Sonoma .

But I know I ’ll be at the show on Friday , when John Greenlee will be talking about his peachy fresh account book , The American Meadow Garden , photographed by the immensely talented Saxon Holt . This is an of import book that I hope motivates people throughout the res publica to quieten the siren birdsong of the “ thoroughgoing ” lawn . Time for a change .
What ’s so nerveless about this year ’s event is that you may leave and get back in . Buy one admission slate for the almost absurd terms of $ 16 and reenter the show for the intact five days without having to open your wallet again . That give more bucks for buying plants and “ toy dog ” for the garden .
Enough for now . As garden show fever engulfs me over the next calendar month or so , I ’ll prove to tempt as many of you as potential to take reward of this great annual event .

Now for the reeeeeally fun part ! This video link to the show ’s site takes you through twelve days of activity , include five day of lot up , the show itself , and the total demolition , all mob into7 - 1/2 minutes .
bask . Hope to see you there . Oh yeah , former - shuttle on - line slate purchase are $ 16 , $ 20 at the door .
