The page on the calendar has twist . It ’s already July , which came in on a flood in Oklahoma . Today is grey-headed , but I do n’t take care . grey skies bring coolheaded weather condition . July will be hot and humid shortly so enjoy it while you’re able to and get those July garden chores done .
It ’s a completely different garden this twelvemonth . Some industrial plant have died from too much rain and Oklahoma ’s clay land . I thanked them for their military service , ripped them out and proceed on . Plants die . I ’ve lost several thing in this weather , including my flyspeck ‘ Troll ’ ginkgo . Yes , it ’s sad , but the petty guy just could n’t manage the heat waving we had before the last rain . So , I ’m replacing it with a purple fountain grass like ‘ Fireworks ’ until I resolve on something more lasting . Grasses grow apace and fill up in bare spots . Thank goodness .
Earlier in springtime , I moved myHydrangea angustipetala‘MonLongShou ’ Golden Crane ® to a fresh border with terrible drainage . I did n’t know how bad the drain was until it started to suffer . By the time I see out what was happen , it look very , very sad . So , I returned it to its former bit . All of this moving may kill it , and I ’ll have to try again . I ’m telling you this because every gardener makes error and has failures . It ’s okay , if sometimes frustrating and expensive .

I think I would share my July garden chores with you . They ’re list below .
Try tropical plants for summertime . Tropicals are so happy with Oklahoma ’s current hot and humid weather because these term replicate the plants ’ aboriginal environment . If you have holes in the garden , study plunking a tropic plant in the empty place . No , they are n’t recurrent , but anything that blooms abundantly , or struts an interesting foliage when the quicksilver tally 100 ° F is n’t going survive an Oklahoma winter . deal tropicals your little mordant garden dresses for summertime .
Some corking tropic plants to seek are :

Sun Parasol Garden Crimson mandevilla with Surdiva Blue scaevola in a blue pot. I haven’t a clue what that white thing is on the container–maybe a sticker? Suntory sent the plants to me. I like them both.
Two unlike varieties of Kong coleus .
In late summer of 2011 , the only mete that looked good that dreadful summer was the one by the service department planted with tropic plants . Here , motley oyster flora , ‘ Peter ’s Wonder ’ flame nettle , genus Alternanthera and heliotrope make a very pretty picture .
Salvia elegens ‘ Golden Delicious ’ pineapple sage in front of my red fountain last drop . No filter , just backlit with beautiful October sun .

Several containers on the back deck. In the pot on the left is ‘Princess Caroline’ grass, ‘Henna’ coleus, purple scaevola, Superbells® Coralberry Punch calibrochoa and alternanthera. All of these are tropical plants so they don’t mind the heat as long as you remember to water.
frequent for crapemyrtle shrub and trees . you may plant crapemyrtles in full Dominicus in this weather , and they will do fine as long as you remember to irrigate them . If you draw a blank , they will lease you make love . Why shop for them now ? Because they are pop to come into bloom . Do n’t just fall for a pretty flush though . Make certain the crapemyrtle you choose is the good one for its locating . Before you corrupt , look online to see if your kind will acquire too large for its space . Buy the ripe sized crapemyrtle , and you wo n’t require to execute operation on it every spring .
Put out more Nolo Bait ™ and Bacillus thuringiensis ( Bt.)This will be my third app of Nolo Bait ™ . I normally only put it out twice , but the rain washed it off both times . As soon as this showery spell is over , I ’ll put out another lotion . Also , I have some Bt . spray for the Checkerspot Butterfly caterpillars . They ’ve destroy several of my smutty - eyed Susans . I do n’t bear in mind sharing some plants with them , but they are ravening this year . These are both organic ascendence only applicable to the fussy pest . They wo n’t ache other creature let in human race . By the way of life , I only put Bt . on the plant life being hit the hardest . I do n’t spray the whole garden because I do n’t want to suffer other caterpillars like those of the Monarchs and other butterfly stroke . Bt . also helps slow down theredbud leaffoldersonThe Rising Sun ® redbud . For some reason , this cultivar is a leaffolder attracter . The Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree was nearly destroyed in class past .
get across on the gallery below to see more picture of the garden . I walked around the outside to get some unlike angles this time .

‘Trailing Plum Brocade’ coleus would look great spilling over a wall or a container.
Mulch . If you mulched with fast - decaying thing like tear up folio or fine pine , you may demand to add to it . We ’ve had a mountain of pelting that has train a toll on mulch that floats . The rain has been rushing in or else of fall gently . I do n’t know about you , but not only is some of my mulch at the bottom of the James Jerome Hill , but the gravel from my paths is too . Also , when it is n’t rain , the weather is hot , muggy and buggy . In blistering weather condition mulch disintegration quicker . I ’ll be adding some shredded foliage to my beds this hebdomad around the plant life , peculiarly anything new . It ’s really the untimely time of twelvemonth to plant unexampled things , but the atmospheric condition has been so rainy , I take chances .
Add shred leaves to swampy borders . The new border next to the sign has a part that is full of stiff . Not only that , the delimitation within the keep on bulwark drains into this layer . After the five to six inches from a few days ago , along with last night ’s rain , I now have a swampy mess in the middle . I ’ll work some rip up leaves into this swampland with the hope that dew worm will get out up the nasty remains . I wo n’t implant anything there until next spring . I ’ll probably add some chicken manure to it too .
Fertilize with an all - natural liquified fertilizer . The garden could use a mid - summer rise so I ’m go away to put a hosepipe - end fertilizer atomiser on and spray organic swimming plant food all over the garden . It will smell out like a lake for a couple of day , but the industrial plant will be all the good this tonic . Make certain your organic fertilizer has fish photographic emulsion and molasses ( or some other raw hold fast agent ) , I likeJohn ’s formula from Lady Bug Branda lot . I also likeJobe ’s Organic All Purpose Fertilizerwhich is granular . you may just throw it down on the soil and insure with mulch . Do n’t forget to fertilise your containers too . A lot of water bleed through those containers so they need all the avail they can get .

Two different varieties of Kong coleus.
Deadhead blooming works . Any flora that have finished blooming can be deadheaded now to encourage more efflorescence . I do n’t deadhead my hydrangeas because I like to leave the flush intact and learn them plough to a beautiful brown or sour pink . Later , in dip , I might hack some of them to lend inside . However , I watchfully deadhead my rose wine , lilies , daylilies , daisies and echinaceas so that their muscularity goes back into the plant instead of into forming seed . Also , you might cut back your asters again . I only cut back my mamma once , but my aster are gaga this class . I cut them back three time , and some still bloomed . I ’ll cut them back again because I need fall flower .
Continue weed . Weeding is ever constant , but it gives me meter to get my mind be adrift while I still get something accomplished . As I weed , I ponder all of the blessing in my life . Blessings like all of you who read this web log .
Okay , that ’s all of the July garden job I can cogitate of . approximate I ’ll go have a methamphetamine hydrochloride of iced afternoon tea and watch the sun set – if I can find it in all of these clouds .
