She is also a board member of theNorth American Rock Garden Society , and she grow a lot of coolrock gardenplants . Sometimes these plants have a reputation for being difficult to grow , but mostly they just require good drainage and good industrial plant choices . The St. Louis surface area has red-hot , humid summer and pretty cold winters ( Zone 6 ) , but Mariel cultivates lots of large plants that love those conditions .
Note : A lot of these plants are so uncommonly spring up that there is n’t a lot of entropy on winter hardiness , so many of theZone rankingsbelow are educate hypothesis .
ThisCampanulaformanekiana(Zones 6–8 ) is just loaded down with flowers ! The coinage generally grow as abiennial , so this explosion of blooms may be its swan song before leaving the garden , but wow , what a beautiful exhibit !

A fly visitor is pollinate thisAristolochia tomentosa(Zones 5–8 ) . Aristolochia ’s odd flowers lure in flies with colour — and sometimes smells — that trick them into mean the bloom are carrion that they can lie their eggs on . Once a fly crawls into the flower , backward - pointing haircloth keep it trapped ; as it bombilate around , it gets traverse with pollen . It is only released when another fly enters that already has pollen from another flower on it . That pollinates the flower and get the hairs to collapse , publish the pollen - covered fly sheet to go off and pollenate the next efflorescence .
Globularia punctata(Zones 3–8 ) front beautiful in the morning light . This plant constitute a low cushion or carpet with these blue blooms in springiness .
Penstemoncobaea(Zones 5–8 ) is in full heyday . There are most 300 dissimilar species of penstemon , native mostly to western North America , and many of them are beautiful additions to the garden . Most , but not all , require well - drained soil to thrive .

Mariel suppose she ’s a big sports fan ofDracocephalum ruyschiana(Zones 3–7 ) , as it is easy to grow and not too vigorous or fast-growing , despite being in the mint family .
There is a whole world of little rock gardenirises . This isIris timofejewii(Zones 4–8 ) with the bright yellowAurinia saxatilis(Zones 3–7 ) behind it . What an amazing gloss combination !
Pulsatilla(Zones 4–8 ) emerge with their incredibly blurred novel parting and flowersearly in the saltation . These emerged so early that they enchant a dusting of former snow on their bloom .

Campanula baumgartenii(Zones 4–8 ) andSileneschafta(Zones 3–9 ) get together in a tapestry of sunny bloom .
