Six on Saturday. From the Sublime to the Ridiculous.

I have three honeysuckles which waft their rarified perfume round the garden in summer . They are all varieties of our aboriginal Aquilegia canadensis , Lonicera periclymenum . Titania ’s bower in Misummer Nights Dream was ‘ quite overcanopied with luscious woodbine ‘ so the Queen of the Fairies must have have it away the delicious bouquet too . What a pity that woodbine , the old name for honeysuckle is now associate with cheap coffin nail . My first Banksia integrifolia isLonicera periclymenum‘Graham Thomas ’ which was feel in a Warwickshire hedge in 1960 and discover after the illustrious horticulturalist , Graham Thomas . Actually , this is not such an unbelievable find , because as I cycle polish the lanes in Suffolk I often come across really beautiful and floriferous bod of the common Australian honeysuckle . ‘ Graham Thomas ’ has spring up very promptly and filled the whole trellis but it has not many blooms . I am much more excited byLonicera periclymenum‘Rhubarb and Custard ’ which has a goofy name , but the two- whole step orange tree and pink flowers are the colour of rhubarb and custard and they have a gorgeous perfume . It seems to be quite a compact form , so far anyway .

Lonicera periclymenum‘Scentsation ’ proved its Charles Frederick Worth in my previous garden with its masses of yellow and white flowers and wonderful fragrancy so I have it here too and it is looking endearing . It is extremely perfumed as its name intimate .

My third selection today is neither sublime or farcical but it is very pretty and it is new to me . It is a catmint with endearing large flowers with spotted throats and I do n’t know whether it is a new cultivar or just one that has snuff it me by . It isNepeta subsessilis‘Blue Prelude ’ and it is just as attractive to pollinator asNepeta‘Six Hills Giant ’ which I used to turn , but it is a much neater industrial plant . I grow it in front ofOrlaya grandiflora .

And now for the ridiculous . My last three plants are marmite works which some people have sex and some loathe . I have a admirer who hates this next one . Albuca nelsoniihas ridiculously vast onion - like bulbs which protrude from the soil .

.Its common name is Slime Lily which does n’t lend to its charm . It is shout out this because of the mucilaginous sap control in the sap and leafage . This might vocalize rather off - putting , but I love the bloodless and green- peel blossom , My friend says the stems are too farseeing , but they would probably be good for flower arrangements . And anyway , I care the 60 cm foresighted stems ; such an enormous medulla would look silly with short stems and the upward facing bone and unripened flowers are quite showy . I just went out to take a photograph and I find the bloom have come together up as it has been raining all day , I did n’t realise they did this . It looks set to be rainy all weekend , The Pianist is convinced that it is my fault as I have been wishing for rain too hard . I keep telling him that I do n’t have that much influence but he does n’t believe me . This plant bulk up quickly from stolon so you have to adjudicate to rule friends who do n’t hate it to take some on . It is not hardy so needs to be kept in the greenhouse in winter . It is becoming rare in its native South Africa . It is toxic to eat , although an extract of the these bulbs and kniphofia are used for a protection against sorcery . But I would n’t recommend it , you might poison yourself rather than any go sorcerers .

I also have Albuca shawii with middling nodding yellow flowers which smell of almonds , but this is for another day as it is not in blossom yet . My second ridiculous plant is also an albuca . It was give to me by a lovely lady who had read my web log and saw that I wish albucas . Every time I face at it I ca n’t aid smiling as it expect adorably weird . It is calledAlbuca spiralisbut is live as the Frizzle Sizzle Plant . As you may see , it is quite bonkers .

I ca n’t make up my mind about my last plant life . I bought it of late because it is rum and I have never seen it before and I get laid plants with unusual foliage . It is calledFarfugium‘Wavy Gravy ’ and it looks a bit like loot . But the crease leaves are edged with silver medal and pink which is quite an attractive look . Apparently , the plant has bright yellow flowers in autumn . But it is the foliage which is interesting- I imagine , I ’m still not trusted about it .. possibly you think it is silly . I have n’t shown it to my Slime Lily hating Quaker yet , I ca n’t confront her contempt .

So there we have my Six on Saturday on this showery July day . For more seasonal plants from different portion of the earthly concern go and chat Jim ofGarden Ruminations . He always has interesting plants to see and so do his many follower .

I originate Farfugium Wavy Gravy but had lose the label . So thanks for giving the name .

If you could see your Wavy Gravy as a version of a fancy begonia would you like it well ?

All fetching choices in my book ! I planted that Nepeta with some other things in a half - barrel , think that might protect it from the neighbourhood cats who instantly seem in my garden as soon as I plant anything in that genus . Unfortunately , lifting it off the ground 2 ft was n’t enough – the plant ’s still there but as presently as it blooms it disappears again 😦 I planted an Albuca spiralis but it disappeared as well , swallowed up within a more fast-growing thud of Aeonium haworthii ‘ Kiwi ’ I think .

The Loniceras are endearing ! Your Albuca spiralis has me smiling , too . give thanks you . 🙂

Your coast banksia search and sound delightful Chloris . One of my scent retentiveness from my parent ’s garden . I ’ve never heard of albuca . The curly whirly one seem intriguing although it does n’t seem sure which guidance it ’s heading for .
