These late-blooming perennials feature colorful, long-lasting flowers above tough, succulent foliage
Earlier this year I highlightedsome of my favorite priming coat - cover sedums . But I ca n’t ignore the taller , upright sedums , or stonecrop , which are extremely showy in free fall . Upright sedum are broken maintenance , have minimal disease and pest problems , bloom from late summer into fall , and are beloved by bees ( many of which were buzzing all around me as I snapped these photos ! ) . They expand in full Dominicus with well - drain soil and have low water needs , making them perfect forxericor piddle - wise landscape . Most gardeners are familiar withAutumn Joy sedum(Hylotelephium‘Herbstfreude ’ , Zones 3–9 ) , but there are so many more spectacular upright sedum species and varieties to choose from . Here are a few of my dearie . ( Please take note that while many upright sedum were reclassify toHylotelephium , you may still detect them sell underSedumonline or at your local nursery . )
‘Dark Magic’ sedum
Hylotelephium telephium‘Dark Magic’Zones:4–9Size:12 to 15 inches marvellous and 20 in wide-eyed
The drear , glossy purple foliage of this salmagundi stands out throughout the growing season , but when topped with large inflorescences of sullen pinkish flowers from August through October , it is breathtaking to behold . Its clumping wont makes it a great choice for mixed mete or abut .
‘Stardust’ sedum
Hylotelephiumspectabile ‘ Stardust’Zones:3–9Size:18 to 24 inches tall and wide
This variety develops bright immature foliage betimes in the time of year . bunch of pale greenish peak buds burst into tiny saturated lily-white blossom , which are just bulge out to open up in this photo . These flush attract a variety of pollinator , including butterfly stroke .
‘Thunderhead’ sedum
Hylotelephium‘Thunderhead’Zones:4–9Size:30 inches magniloquent and 24 inch wide
The foliage of this variety is very interesting ; the leaf are dark green with carmine margins on dark red stems that ride out very vertical . The large bunch of magenta blossoms are stunning and provide a decent contrast to the brown tint of ornamental grasses .
‘Matrona’ sedum
Hylotelephium telephium‘Matrona’Zones:3–9Size:30 inch improbable and 18 inches extensive
interchangeable to ‘ Thunderhead ’ , this form has green leafage and Bourgogne stems . But in dividing line , ‘ Matrona ’ has lots of clusters of short pink flowers on very improbable stems , which really stand out . It look strike in a mixed mete . I have found that this variety can also handle some fond shade .

The bright colors of upright sedum flowers, like those of this ‘Thunderhead’ sedum, look great against the bronze and brown tones of most fall gardens.

‘Dark Magic’ sedum has deeply purple foliage beneath bronzy, mauve flowers.

The light green-and-white coloring of ‘Stardust’ sedum provides great contrast if you also have sedums with red or purple flowers.

The reddish foliage and stems of ‘Thunderhead’ sedum are echoed by its brilliantly maroon flowers.

‘Matrona’ sedum’s foliage has orange highlights, which are picked up by the pink flowers.
