Nathan Deppe describes a glasshouse — only a little jokingly — as “ a lean metal structure with a thin back breaker of spyglass that wants to come crashing to the terra firma and return to the earth . ” His problem is to ensure these singular facilities in Purdue University ’s College of Agriculture are well maintained and equipped for current and next inquiry .

Deppe supports plant skill research in the college by managing the 50,000 - square - metrical unit HLA glasshouse and overseeing outgrowth sleeping accommodation adeptness in coordination with Agronomy and Botany and Plant Pathology . Each class approximately 50 research projection come in the greenhouse , and 80 to 100 research projection are conduct in growth chambers .

Deppe has been HLA ’s plant growth facility manager since September 2017 . He and his team help congeal up facilities and experiment for undergraduates as well as for faculty , graduate students and chitchat learner and in many Agriculture departments .

“ They ’re experts in their fields , and I ’m essay to be the expert resource I can for them , ” Deppe says .

He ca n’t remember a time he did n’t love horticulture . Growing up in key Illinois , he looked forward to the arrival of each spring ’s ejaculate catalogue and savour gardening .

After realize a BS in forestry from the University of Illinois Urbana - Champaign in 2002 , Deppe landed a job manage growth sleeping room , greenhouses and field game at the U.S. Department of Agriculture - Agricultural Research Service ( USDA - ARS ) in Peoria , Illinois , from 2004 to 2011 . Along the way , he retrovert to his alma mater for a master ’s degree in urban forestry . He left the USDA - ARS in 2011 to become the University of Illinois ’ plant charge installation coordinator .

After six year in the job , he was excited when a position at Purdue open up . “ Purdue historically is the premier site for advancements in horticultural technology like LED illuminance , ” he notes . “ I also liked the idea that freestanding departments were doing their own research but people were also bring together doing interdisciplinary research . ”

Deppe hired technician Dan Little and employs undergraduates to ensure that users have what they need to sway out their inquiry , instruction or outreach . Deppe find his workplace peculiarly satisfy because it patronise the three core objectives of the realm - grant commission .

He also manages small growth chambers across three buildings that are designed for research with specific environmental parameter . “ This is a college resource , so I work with many department , ” he explain , include Agricultural & Biological Engineering , Agronomy , Biochemistry , Botany and Plant Pathology , Forestry and Natural Resources , and HLA .

Deppe ’s own small enquiry projection often support other researcher ’ work . “ Right now I ’m testing unlike soil to see what works best with sure plant materials , ” he explains . “ I also wish novel irrigation design and new sensors — the technology firearm . ”

Deppe chairs the Association of Education and Research Greenhouse Curators , a electronic internet of professionals employed in manipulate surround agriculture facility at research and educational institutions .

As he expect ahead at what ’s coming in the next five to 10 years , Deppe is thinking about how Purdue ’s greenhouses can be quick : “ We have a great strategic architectural plan , but things are always germinate in the research field . You have to be able to adapt . ”
